Most Wednesdays - Check our Facebook page - "The Greenbelt Conservancy" for updates Tonight's hike and run will meet in High Rock Park (this is a change of venue just for tonight). Choose to hike or run: these are separate activities. The hike is moderate paced, and the run is faster and more suitable for experienced trail runners. Bring a headlamp along as it is beginning to be dark when we return! Greenbelt staff and Staten Island Athletic Club members lead a hike beginning at 6 pm and a trail run beginning at 7 pm on Wednesday evenings throughout the year. The hike and trail run usually cover approximately five miles. Headlamps are required in every season. Dress for the weather and trail conditions. Bring water and a snack if you think you'll need it. No reservation is required. We go in all weather unless conditions are dangerous. Always check the Greenbelt Conservancy's Facebook page for updates on changes or cancellations. This event was originally scheduled for March 15. We apologize for the inconvenience. If you registered for 3/15, you are automatically registered for 3/22 "Water-Water Everywhere!" If you are not able to make it on this date, please call us at 718-351-3450 to cancel. Thank you! Come and learn the magic of water! Families will explore different properties of water including surface tension, absorption of different materials and how oil and water can mix. The main event will be a fun game for families to learn about how water is recycled and used in our environment! This free program is sponsored by Greener NY. Wing, Assistant Professor of History, College of Staten Island for an insightful talk about his book on forests and state power in Early Modern Spain. While forest management and social balance may sound like modern concepts, the rulers of imperial Spain had considered them when managing timber stands at home and abroad, spurred by their need to sustain large ocean-going fleets. Roots of Empire examines the intersection of forest exploitation and the expansion of royal power in the global Spanish monarchy, presenting archival research that challenges the traditional portrayal of the Spanish as unable and uninterested in conserving its forests. Roots of Empire explores how Spain’s rising imperial commitments led to long-term strategies of forest management in the Old World and the New, and offers new interpretations of conservation and resource management through the lens of the material challenges of state building. Light refreshments provided. This program is sponsored by Greener NYC. Registration required. Call 718-351-3450 or email naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org
