While colorful changing leaves and cooler temperatures are the most noticeable characteristics of the Fall season, the forest floor also showcases a more subtle sign of transition. 

This year marked the third annual Staten Island Bio Blitz at Blue Heron Park, which is located on the south shore of Staten Island. The Greenbelt environmental educators were pleased to be involved. 

One of the more diminutive snakes found on Staten Island is the northern ring neck snake (Diadophis punctatus edwardsi)). While they are harmless to human, the ring neck snake is a terror to the salamanders, earthworms and insects that comprise the major part of their diet.
