N/A – Harvest season is here, so come celebrate the bounty with the Greenbelt Educators by learning how to make this traditional Native American craft. Corn Husk Dolls span time and cultures, and are fun and easy ways to honor the spirit of corn while giving thanks for the abundant harvest. – Join the educators to learn the ancient art of how to make your own rope (or cordage), out of natural materials. Using prepared materials, you will make several feet of rope and will be guided in how to make a net around your water bottle to keep it close and stay hydrated on your hikes throughout the Greenbelt. N/A Join in on our first Advanced Basketry series to learn how to identify and safely harvest your own natural materials to create a simple basket. The first part of the program will be focused on hiking to the harvesting site, finding our materials, and safely removing them from the landscape to prepare for the craft program. Not only will we be harvesting them for a utilitarian purpose, but the Greenbelt will be healthier once we’ve removed damaging invasive plants from the forest. The second part of the program will reconvene back in our outdoor classroom to learn a universal basket weave to turn all of your Wisteria vines into a beautiful rustic basket. Best for ages 12+. Please be sure to wear long pants, long sleeve shirts, and bring water. We will be using hand pruners and some other hand tools for harvesting our vines. Work gloves and bug spray will be provided. – Join in on our first Advanced Basketry series to learn how to identify and safely harvest your own natural materials to create a simple basket. Join in on our monthly pregnancy and postpartum hike with an Environmental Educator who is also expecting a baby. Start with gentle stretches to prepare your body and move onto a maternity-level hike to keep our bodies moving and our community building. Hike will be easy-moderate between 1-2 miles. – Join us for a colorful hike up through the Red Trail as we pass ponds, changing leaves and a lighthouse. Learn about the old LaTourette farm as we pause at the now LaTourette Golf House. – About the Course Fall Flat takes you along the White Trail and around Willowbrook Lake; it is flat and well suited for novice runners and walkers as well as more competitive athletes. The trails wind and turn, and you must follow course markers to ensure you head in the right direction You will encounter uneven surfaces, gullies, tree roots, logs, rocks, foot bridges and mud - it's a trail race! The course is clearly marked with overhead ribbons. Course marshals are in place to provide assistance. Thank you from the Greenbelt Conservancy Thank you for running (or walking) to support the Greenbelt Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that works in partnership with NYC Parks to care for the Greenbelt. We are grateful to our event supporters: NYC Council Members, Joseph Borelli and David Carr. A special thank you to our amazing volunteers and staff members.
