– Sunday, March 4: What plants make good neighbors? What are effective ways to maximize limited space? Look at best practices and clever space saving tips and tricks, then work on a grid to plan a design for your garden. Ages 10+. Free. Call (718) 351-3450 or e-mail naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org. Tuesday, March 6 - Calling all citizen scientists to join us on the cusp of Spring as we begin Frog Monitoring sessions in High Rock Park. The Greenbelt's environmental educators will lead the way to water bodies that frogs inhabit in High Rock Park. Frogs and toads play an important role, serving as both prey and predator, in wetland ecosystems and are considered indicators of environmental health. Many previously abundant frog and toad populations have experienced dramatic population declines both in the United States and around the world and it's essential that scientists understand the scope, geographic scale, and cause of these declines You'll learn a lot about our local ecosystem and all the creatures that live here. Dress for the weather and terrain, and bring along a flashlight or headlamp. Walking along our trails is involved and we will cover approximately one mile in distance. Feel free to call us at 718-351-3450 if you have questions. – This event for Wednesday, Marc 7 has been canceled due to storm conditions. Every Wednesday: Join us for our weekly evening, guided hike where we will cover 4/5 miles. There are some small climbs but it's fairly easy. You will probably see parts of the Greenbelt and the trail system that you haven't seen before! A headlamp or flashlight is required. Dress for the weather and trail conditions. Bring water and a snack if you think you'll need it. No reservation is required. We go in all weather unless conditions are dangerous. Always check the Greenbelt Conservancy's Facebook page for updates on changes or cancellations (Cancellations generally only occur in very bad weather). This event is made possible thanks to the generous funding from NYC Council Member, Joseph C. Borelli of the 51st District on Staten Island, as part of the Greener NYC Initiative.
