Whatever it will be, let’s take a hike! – Join the Greenbelt educators for this second part of our Winter Outdoor Skill series and learn different winter outdoor skills and survival techniques. This outdoor program will cover basic shelter building, fire starting, tracking, and ways to protect yourself, while exploring winter’s wilderness. Dress appropriately for winter conditions. Please, bring water and a snack. – Learn about the most common birds you might find in the Greenbelt-or in your own backyard. – Meet at the intersection of Travis Avenue and Mulberry Avenue for this short winter hike through the William T. Davis refuge. Dress appropriately for hiking outside in the weather conditions. – The Greenbelt Native Plant Center collects seed from wild populations of native plants around the region for use in horticulture and restoration projects on public lands in NYC. In the winter, the previous season's seed collections are cleaned for efficient storage and treatment before being grown out at the nursery. Please join GNPC’s seed collectors and staff in processing these wild collections. Work will be indoors and can be done sitting down. Please come prepared for inclement weather outdoors, sturdy footwear, and long-sleeved shirts that can get dusty or dirty. Space is limited and registration is required. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. – We will stroll by ponds and lakes, greet the largest Tulip Tree. – Volunteer with the Greenbelt Native Plant Center staff to help care for the diverse group of native plants we grow to be planted in parks and restoration projects throughout the City. Activities may include processing beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata), or weeding, transplanting, moving plants in the yard and greenhouses for the upcoming spring season. Nursery staff and volunteers alike will meet at the parking lot of the Greenbelt Native Plant Center to discuss how we harvest and process before going out to the field. You will get hands on experience with growing native plants and nursery operation. Come dressed in sturdy boots or shoes, long pants, and clothing that can get dirty. Please be sure to wear a face mask and bring your own water bottle to this event. Space is limited and registration is required. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. N/A Audre Lorde, former NYS Poet Laureate, was born on this day in 1934 and lived on Staten Island. – Now’s the time to focus on fungi, look for lichen, marvel at mosses, watch for woodpeckers- and more. – Join us for a moderate and fun, family hike in the LaTourette Park section of the Greenbelt. Learn more about Staten Island’s natural and human history, specifically the Heyerdahl Family who settled here in Colonial times, and explore the ruins of their farmstead.
