Register Here – There is so much to observe in the great outdoors, but it can be a little overwhelming to know what we’re looking at when there are so many things in our view. Sometimes, it’s a good idea to look small and close. Let’s take a short virtual trip to the forest floor and explore just one square foot of what lies beneath our feet in the woods. What can we see/feel/smell/hear in just a small space? What are some of the things we can identify, and what are some of the questions that are raised that we can walk away with to find out more? Register here for this event ! – Join us for a hike into the center of the Greenbelt, and up to what was once the largest farm; the LaTourette Golfhouse. Trail has some inclines and declines. Approx. 3.5 miles. Register to join us. – Join us at the Greenbelt Nature Center for our Con Edison Family Science program. This program is a series of free monthly sessions featuring science topics and experiments designed for children and parents to accomplish as a team. A few short, self-guided activities will start families thinking together. *** Each ticket reserves one table for a family/group of up to 4 people. – Learn about the basics of birding on this afternoon hike through the Greenbelt. Educator Karen Roos instructed participants on how to identify birds, how to use field guides and how to use binoculars. Binoculars will be provided or bring your own. Meet in the High Rock Park park parking lot located at the top of Nevada Avenue. – Join us, and discover the secret life of one of the Greenbelt’s most important animals, the salamanders. Participants will learn about salamander biology and life cycles, while exploring the vernal pools and wetlands in the LaTourette Park. Approx. 2.5 miles. – Join the Environmental Educators for a short hike to a beautiful place in High Rock Park for Earth Day storytime to read about kids just like you who are growing up in the city and how nature is still an important part of their lives! We’ll continue with a craft and a planting, putting recycled materials to good use while turning trash into treasures- or tin cans into planters! Best for ages 4+ – Join us for a hike in celebration of Earth Day. We will learn about some of the historical events of this special day, and discuss a bit of the history of the Greenbelt. Wear sturdy shoes and meet us at the High Rock Parking lot, 200 Nevada Ave., off of Rockland Ave. – Join Greenbelt environmental educator & Leave No Trace Master Educator Christopher Ricker in this Leave No Trace Awareness workshop! This program will cover the seven principles of Leave No Trace. Participants will learn how to hike and explore outside in a way that leaves a minimal impact on natural areas. – Join the Greenbelt Conservation Corps for this Earth Day celebration stewardship event to plant native plant species to start to rehabilitate parts of High Rock Park. The GCC team will lead the group in how to work as a stewardship crew, how to use some trail tools, where to plant young shrubs and trees, how to protect them in their vulnerable states, how to identify native plant species, and why it’s so important to begin to restore our forested woodland. All plants will be supplied by the Greenbelt Native Plant Center, and participants will have an opportunity to sink some plants right into the Earth where they will be nourished by the forest for generations to come. All ages are welcome to this family-friendly stewardship event. The trail will be close to the road and very accessible to all! – What can we learn about our environment from the animals and plants around us? Join educator Karen Roos and discover how we can use nature’s calendar in assessing the effects of climate change on our local ecological communities. – Join the Greenbelt Conservation Corps for this ongoing 2022 trail stewardship project designed to engage individuals with a sense of community, and wish to make the Greenbelt a better place! This monthly GCC stewardship event will cover the basics of trail design, building, invasive species removal and maintenance requirements, while reestablishing a section of the N and E Trail in the LaTourette section of the Greenbelt. Required Gear: Long pants and boots/sturdy shoes. Please bring water, a snack, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Tools and PPE will be provided.
