– It’s Mad March Hare time! Named for the European hare’s “mad” behavior of boxing during mating season, we will enjoy the budding of the green for Springtime in the Greenbelt. Meet in the parking lot across from the church of St. Andrew on Arthur Kill Road. – In honor of Women’s History Month, join local historian and author Pat Salmon as we learn more about the contributions of several amazing women who impacted Staten Island and, in many cases, beyond. These women met challenges but persevered and accomplished their goals. We will examine the influential lives of Eva Bechtel, Audre Lorde, Elizabeth Britton, Alice Austen, Mary Jane Irwin O’Donovan Rossa, Catherine “Mac” O’Callaghan, Dorothy Day, and many others. This program is sponsored by NYC City Council Discretionary Funds. Additional instructions for participants: Parking is limited at the Greenbelt Nature Center, so plan accordingly. Additional parking is available at the Greenbelt Recreation Center, 501 Brielle Ave. Carpooling, public transportation, and rideshare services are great options as well. Register Today! – March is reading month! The New York Public Library and Greenbelt Educators host a book exchange and upcycled paper craft workshop. Take home something new to read, and, using paper and other second-hand materials, craft something that a special someone is sure to love. – Join the Greenbelt Conservation Corps to improve the Nature Center trail for the peak spring hiking season- and beyond. Let’s build some new puncheon and modify existing puncheon to reduce erosion and provide a more level, less muddy hiking experience. Dress appropriately for working outdoors in the weather conditions. Wear sturdy boots or shoes. – Allow your imagination to soar as we listen to a story or two related to the time of year, then make your own creative craft. Weather permitting, we will go on a short walk to experience the forest in March, searching for birds, early signs of spring, and more. Recommended for ages 4-8 with adult chaperone.
