– Join us in celebrating Wildflower Week with a hike to identify native wildflowers in the Greenbelt. The goal of NYC Wildflower Week is to connect people to their local environment and inspires New Yorkers to advocate for our urban landscape that is equitable, beautiful, and ecologically sound. – We’re used to bringing people into the Greenbelt to teach them about nature, but guess what?! You don’t have to leave your local sidewalk to find nature right in your neighborhood! From native plants to street trees, squirrels and birds, nature is all around you! Come on a quick virtual journey with us as we explore our urban landscape to identify and observe some of the exciting plant life and wildlife that fills our city streets. – Hike from the Greenbelt Nature Center to historic Richmond Town on this brisk paced hike. Distance is will be 6+ miles round trip. We will meet and begin at the Greenbelt Nature Center. Duration will depend on the pace/size of the group. Please be prepared for the weather, distance and terrain. Bring plenty of water and a snack. – Join us for a journey through the Greenbelt’s wandering white trail. We will be on the lookout for spring flowers: violets and wild geraniums, and returning warblers. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Trail is level. Approx. 4 miles - trail may be muddy – Discover the complex world of pond life and why stoneflies, mayflies, and diving beetles play critical roles in sustaining healthy aquatic ecosystems. As we record and monitor a variety of freshwater invertebrates that call the Greenbelt home. – Join the Greenbelt Conservation Corps for this ongoing 2022 trail stewardship project designed to engage individuals with a sense of community, and wish to make the Greenbelt a better place! This monthly GCC stewardship event will cover the basics of trail design, building, invasive species removal and maintenance requirements, while reestablishing a section of the N and E Trail in the LaTourette section of the Greenbelt. Required Gear: Long pants and boots/sturdy shoes. Please bring water, a snack, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Tools and PPE will be provided. Project site is accessible from the Greenbelt Nature Center on moderate and uneven terrain. Participants will be asked to carry tools and materials to and from the worksite. – Come stretch your imagination with the Environmental Educators in this recycled craft program to make your very own Recycled Robot! Using cans, plastic bottles, cardboard, and many other recycled materials which were destined for the landfill, we’ll make these unique constructions which will always remind us that we can repurpose just about ANYthing! We will be working on the White Trail in the Egbertville Ravine. Gloves, bags and refreshments will be supplied. Service credit is available. – Join us at the Greenbelt Nature Center for our Con Edison Family Science program. This program is a series of free monthly sessions featuring science topics and experiments designed for children and parents to accomplish as a team. A few short, self-guided activities will start families thinking together. *** Each ticket reserves one table for a family/group of up to 4 people. – Step out on a Spring day and up to the man-made hill recently dedicated to former Staten Island Parks Commissioner, Thomas Paulo. We will pass skunk cabbage and winding streams. Listen for migrant birds returning to the Greenbelt. Bring binoculars if you have them. Trail up to Moses Mt. is gradual (no mountain climbing here). Approx. 2.5 miles – Join the Greenbelt Conservancy on Thursday, May 26th at 7 PM for aone-of-a-kind 21+ special event at the Carousel for All Children inWillowbrook Park (2 Eton Place, Staten Island). Guests will enjoy a tapbeer bar sponsored by Manhattan Beer Distributors, a craft beer barsponsored by Flagship Brewery, delicious carnival themed food, livemusic by Cause and the Effects (NYC's BEST live band), and more! Tickets are $75 per person. This year's event is limited in capacity so please register early.
