– Join us for a scenic hike through the heart of the Greenbelt. The Red trail winds along hillsides and streams. Meet at the Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave. – Become a community scientist and discover how you can help frogs and toads in our environment by identifying and monitoring their unique vocal calls. The Greenbelt’s FrogWatch USA chapter is part of a nationwide program that monitors and tracks amphibian populations by collecting data with help from volunteers like you! – – Join us for a hike in our “buckle of the Greenbelt”. We will observe the ponds of the area as we walk. Meet at the High Rock parking lot, 200 Nevada Ave., off of Rockland Ave. – Join Environmental Educators Christopher Ricker and Angel Ehlers on a virtual hike along Willowbrook’s White Trail to observe and uncover some of history’s hidden treasures and natural features. The educators will share the landscape of one of the Greenbelt’s most frequented parks, and even adventure to find a mysterious hidden chimney in the woods! – – Join us for this approximately four mile hike through the Greenbelt. We will be hiking the hill of Todt, (Deere Park) up to the highest point of elevation on the eastern seaboard, then navigating to the woods of St. Francis where we will then marvel at the views of the forest on wooden platformed trails. Meet at the end of Staten Island Blvd, off Ocean Terrace, near the back of the Petrides School. – Join the Freshkills Park Alliance at the Greenbelt Nature Center for a hands-on Park Planner Workshop where families will work together to create a model of a park of their own design using recycled and reclaimed materials! Families will learn about the history of Freshkills Park and the Greenbelt, as well as explore the who, how, and why of park development through reflecting on their own relationships with their local parks before creating a model of the park of their dreams! (Note: tickets and event capacity: following the Family Science model of tickets per table/family) – Join the Greenbelt Conservation Corps for this ongoing 2022 trail stewardship project designed to engage individuals with a sense of community, and wish to make the Greenbelt a better place! This monthly GCC stewardship event will cover the basics of trail design, building, invasive species removal and maintenance requirements, while reestablishing a section of the N and E Trail in the LaTourette section of the Greenbelt. Project site is accessible from the Greenbelt Nature Center on moderate and uneven terrain. Participants will be asked to carry tools and materials to and from the worksite. Required Gear: Long pants and boots/sturdy shoes. Please bring water, a snack, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Tools and PPE will be provided. N/A Join us as we continue our recycled craft series to repurpose old materials that are destined for the trash. Join us for this Facebook Live v virtual program as we make a bouquet of beautiful flowers from an old book in this program meant to really give these materials new life! Use your own book or come pick one up from us! This easy craft is best for kids ages 6+ and the young at heart! – Grab your family and come for a hike with us. We will be searching for some signs of Spring! Wear shoes with traction and meet us at the Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave. – Join us at the Greenbelt Nature Center for our Con Edison Family Science program. This program is a series of free monthly sessions featuring science topics and experiments designed for children and parents to accomplish as a team. There is so much life in these woods, and learning to track wildlife is a great way to stay connected to them without getting too close! Join us for this short introduction to basic animal tracking to give you an idea of where to start identifying and reading the signs that animals leave all across the landscape.
