– During the course of the program, participants will take a nature walk to gather leaves (weather-permitting), then have the opportunity to paint/print/make books inspired by the leaves for themselves and contribute components to be used in a fiber arts mural. This project is funded in part by a DCA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts with public funding from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Age 5+. Free. – Autumn has arrived and it’s time to explore the changing-in-season at the Greenbelt, while learning how to minimize our environmental footprint in the outdoors. This Leave No Trace Awareness workshop will provide an overview on the 7 principles of Leave No Trace as they pertain to the autumn season. Participants who successfully complete this program will be awarded a LNT Awareness Certificate. – Join in on the seasonal spooky fun at the Greenbelt and carve your very own shrunken head out of apples. This all-natural craft is a classic, and fun for the whole family! Safe tools and materials will be provided, and basic carving instructions will be given. Best for ages 6+. – Join the Greenbelt for one of our longer hikes. We will ramble the yellow trail up to the peaceful woods of the board trail of St. Francis. Meet at HR parking lot. N/A Diane Garcia, a retired teacher and a synchronized swimmer, will be reading her children's book, "Wendy Willow Water Ballerina - A story about Synchronized Swimming". The story highlights her first experience with Synchronized Swimming at the Royal Flamingo Swim Club which was located on Staten Island . She will be explaining the tie in between synchronized swimming and all our aquatic friends, dolphins, flamingos, cranes, sharks, and many more! Children will join her during and after the reading, on the floor, to mimic some of the moves and positions of their favorite aquatic friends. Recommended for ages 4-8 with adult chaperone. N/A Stay healthy during and after your pregnancy by getting active in the Greenbelt. Join in on our monthly pregnancy and postpartum hike with an Environmental Educator who is also expecting a baby. Start with gentle stretches to prepare your body and move onto a maternity-level hike to keep our bodies moving and our community building. Hike will be easy-moderate between 1-2 miles. – Join the Greenbelt Conservation Corps in celebrating the inaugural City of Forest Day by volunteering in High Rock Park. In part 1 of this full day of stewardship, you will learn to build wooden puncheon, which will help increase safe accessibility to our wooded trails so that more people can benefit from the joys and comforts of nature. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes and long pants, bug spray will be available. Lunch will be provided after the program (11-12pm) as a thank you to all GCC volunteers. Program will take place rain or shine. – Please join us and the Protectors of Pine Oak Woods removing non-indigenous plants to improve trails and help the forest in High Rock Park. We will meet in the parking lot of High Rock Park, located at 200 Nevada Avenue, SINY 10306. Gloves and tools will be provided. Please bring water, wear long sleeves and pants, and boots. Service credit is available. – Continue to join the Greenbelt Conservation Corps in celebrating the inaugural City of Forest Day by volunteering in High Rock Park. In part 2 of this full day of stewardship, you will help restore an area of our forest by planting native shrubs in the understory, as well as learn about and remove invasive plants from the area. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes and long pants, bug spray will be available. Lunch will be provided before the program (11-12pm) as a thank you to all GCC volunteers. Program will take place rain or shine. – Join the Greenbelt on a scenic trail in Egbertville Ravine. Watch as the natural creek flows on its journey to Richmondtown. Then marvel at the sight of Walker Pond. N/A Join the Greenbelt for some fun and spooky facts about our local owls. Then dissect an owl pellet to see what it’s been eating! Owl craft to take home. – Join us at the Greenbelt Nature Center for our Con Edison Family Science program. This program is a series of free monthly sessions featuring science topics and experiments designed for children and parents to accomplish as a team. A few short, self-guided activities will start families thinking together. *****Each ticket is good for a family of up to 4 people. - GET YOURS TODAY – Join the Greenbelt Educators for a hauntingly-fun spooky season hike though the dark corners of the Greenbelt. This “Hiking Dead” guided walk will start at the Greenbelt Nature Center and follow the Blue Trail into Blood Root Valley. Costumes are encouraged. Bring water, snacks, other weather appropriate clothing under your costumes.
