Photo: Dorothy Reilly Every Wednesday unless weather conditions are severe (regular amounts of snow won't stop us from going out!): Join us for our weekly evening, guided hike where we will cover 4/5 miles. There are some small climbs but it's fairly easy. We try to maintain a quick pace but can accommodate all skill levels. You will see parts of the Greenbelt and the trail system that you haven't seen before! We typically meet at the Greenbelt Nature Center unless there is a special program being held, in which case we begin and end at the LaTourette Golf Course Clubhouse, 1001 Richmond Hill Road. Always check the event listings here for any changes. Dress for the weather and trail conditions. Proper footwear is essential. Bring water and a snack if you think you'll need it. No reservation is required. We go in all weather unless conditions are dangerous (thunder storms). Always check the Greenbelt Conservancy's Facebook page for updates on changes or cancellations (Cancellations generally only occur in very bad weather). As the days get shorter, we will leave and return in the dark so please bring a flashlight or headlamp to be prepared. – Thursdays October 4 - December 13 (excluding Thursday, November 22 - Thanksgiving Day) – Thursdays October 4 - December 13 (excluding Thanksgiving November 22rd) – Thursday October 4: "Celebrating Italian Heritage: the NYC Experience" Join us to meet Marianna Randazzo, the author of Italians of Brooklyn. Brooklyn, or "Bruculinu," as many Italians affectionately pronounced it, is where Italian values, culture, and dreams thrived. In an era when over four million Italians found their way to America, the first significant influx came during the 1880s, primarily from rural peasant communities fleeing poverty and overpopulation. Although Italians in South Brooklyn have been traced back as far as the 1820s, most settled in Manhattan. The 1855 New York Census did not list any Italian natives in Brooklyn; however, by 1890, there were 9,563 Italians residing in the borough. By 1900, Brooklyn's Italian population was second only to Manhattan. Although the last notable wave of Italian immigration ended in the 1960s, Italian remains one of the six prevalent foreign languages in New York according to a 2007 census estimate. This work serves as a time capsule to remind us of the contributions and influences these immigrants have offered to the community. This event is free, and is funded in part by Poets & Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Please contact the Greenbelt Nature Center if you have any questions. – Save the date - Saturday, October 6 from 12 noon - 4 pm in Willowbrook Park, for the Greenbelt's Annual Pumpkin Festival where the prettiest pumpkins prevail in our patch! Pumpkins are for sale on a first come/first served basis. Family friendly activities ranging from I FISH NY - fishing lessons to a nature-inspired craft led by the Greenbelt's environmental educators and face painting. More details to come! The Carousel will close for the season at the end of day on Monday, October 8 (Columbus Day). Willowbrook Park and the Carousel for All Children are located at 2 Eton Place, Staten Island, NY 10314. The main parking lot is located behind the Carousel pavilion. Due to circumstances beyond our control, there will be no petting zoo this season. About the fishing program: Join New York State Department of Environmental Conservation I FISH program for a free fishing clinic! The I FISH NY program promotes environmental stewardship through fishing and encourages New Yorkers to get outside. We provide the fishing equipment and bait, and if you have never fished before, don’t worry we will teach you! This program is for all ages, and we encourage everyone to come. If you have a young child, we just ask that parents fish with them.
