– For the second year in a row, the Greenbelt Conservancy will be partnering with Casale Jewelers for this exciting contest. Visit the Greenbelt Nature Center for an evening of dinner and conversation surrounding grassland habitat. Members of the Freshkills Park team will join ecological researchers from the College of Staten Island to lead a presentation and discussion about one of Staten Island’s lesser-known habitat types. Learn about the history of land use on Staten Island and in the Northeast that has led to the loss of grassland habitat, as well as the opportunities that newly formed urban grasslands provide. Guests are welcome to arrive starting at 5pm. The dinner and discussion will begin at 6pm. A vegetarian dinner utilizing local produce will be provided. This event is free but registration is required. The weekly evening group hike covers approximately five miles at a quick pace. All are welcome including children with hiking experience who can cover the distance. Please dress for the weather and terrain, and bring water to sustain you. This hike meets in all seasons. Beginning in October, headlamps or a flashlight is required. Please join us! Thursday, June 27: Please join us on this new date for our annual Blue Jean Ball at the Carousel in Willowbrook Park for guests 21 and over. It's a fun evening featuring live music by The Cause and the Effects, open craft beer and wine bar, delicious light dinner, treats and lots of fun - surprises await too! See you there. Each year data is consistently collected along a well-established route on the last Saturday in June. From Snug Harbor to the Conference House with the Greenbelt in between, butterflies are sought and identified with totals being shared with the North American Butterfly Association. For more information or to join the count, contact Cliff Hagen of Protectors of Pine Oak Woods: 718-313-8591.
