– Sunday, February 18: Celebrate the Year of the Dog by participating in fun activities dedicated to promoting safe, and playful ways to spend time with pets in the outdoors. All well-mannered dog friends are invited to join in on the festivities. If you don’t have a furry friend to call your own, adoption resources will be available at the Greenbelt Nature Center. This event will be followed by an easy, dog friendly hike on the Nature Center Trail at 1pm. There are some small climbs but it's fairly easy. You will probably see parts of the Greenbelt and the trail system that you haven't seen before! A headlamp or flashlight is required. Dress for the weather and trail conditions. Bring water and a snack if you think you'll need it. No reservation is required. We go in all weather unless conditions are dangerous. Always check the Greenbelt Conservancy's Facebook page for updates on changes or cancellations (Cancellations generally only occur in very bad weather). Take a closer look at fingerprints, discover how to see your pulse, measure your lung capacity, measure your reaction time, and more. Thursday, February 22 Hike to identify different trees, and brainstorm what trees offer to both ecosystems and to humans. Then, create nature- and winter-inspired artwork from a tree’s pulp, a.k.a. paper! Ages 7+. Free. Registration required. Join us to explore the rich history of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps Legacy, then participate in an outdoor trail service project to enhance the Greenbelt for future generations. Dress appropriately for winter conditions and working outside for two plus hours. Water and boots/sturdy shoes recommended. Tools and safety equipment provided. Community service credit available. Ages 14+ (ages 14-17 will need written parental consent). This is a free event but registration is required. Friday, February 23 Glaciers play a major role in New York State’s geologic history. Through hands-on demonstrations and activities, learn about the power of ice and how these glaciers helped carve the land we live on. Ages 9+ Free.
