Sunday, October 14: Join us and our friends from the National Park Service to travel (one way!) from Willowbrook Park to Great Kills Park. Meet at the flagpole in Willowbrook Park. This brisk hike is approximately 7 miles one way. You will have to arrange for a ride back to the starting point. Bring water, a snack, and insect repellent. Registration required. Call 718- 351-3450 or email naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org. Join Greenbelt staff naturalists for a leisurely hike in Staten Islands's newest park, Brookfield Park. We will meet at the entrance located at Brookfield Place and Arthur Kill Road, Staten Island, NY 10308. Dress for the weather and terrain. To learn more about the 250-acre Brookfield Park and its hiking trails, click here. This event is free but registration is required. Call us at 718-351-3450 or by email: naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org – Night Hike in the Snow. Photo: Dorothy Reilly Every Wednesday unless weather conditions are severe (regular amounts of snow won't stop us from going out!): Join us for our weekly evening, guided hike where we will cover 4/5 miles. There are some small climbs but it's fairly easy. We try to maintain a quick pace but can accommodate all skill levels. You will see parts of the Greenbelt and the trail system that you haven't seen before! We typically meet at the Greenbelt Nature Center unless there is a special program being held, in which case we begin and end at the LaTourette Golf Course Clubhouse, 1001 Richmond Hill Road. Always check the event listings here for any changes. Dress for the weather and trail conditions. Proper footwear is essential. Bring water and a snack if you think you'll need it. No reservation is required. We go in all weather unless conditions are dangerous (thunder storms). Always check the Greenbelt Conservancy's Facebook page for updates on changes or cancellations (Cancellations generally only occur in very bad weather). As the days get shorter, we will leave and return in the dark so please bring a flashlight or headlamp to be prepared. – October 17: Save the Date for the Greenbelt Conservancy's Annual Meeting. The Greenbelt Conservancy is a nonprofit organization that works in partnership with NYC Parks to care for the Greenbelt's parks, trails and facilities. Join us to meet members of our Board of Directors and staff, and to learn about our year's highlights. Light refreshments will be served. Kindly reserve here by email or by telephone at 718-667-2165, ext. 106. Saturday October 20: Join us for lots of slimy fun as we create spooky slime, learn about slimy creatures that live in the Greenbelt, and play a few scary games. Come in costume if you dare! Program geared for ages 6-10 years with adult chaperone. $8 non-members/$6 for Greenbelt Conservancy members. Registration and pre-payment required. Call 718- 351-3450 or email: naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org.
