– Sunday, November 4: Decomposition is a natural process that helps to create healthy new soils. Discover how to speed up this process and reduce your household waste by learning the basics of home composting. All ages. Registration required; Call (718) 351-3450 or email naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org. N/A The Greenbelt administrative offices and the Greenbelt Nature Center will be closed to the public on Election Day. The trails are open all day, however. Please visit us. Every Wednesday: Join our Greenbelt environmental educators/naturalists for a moderate paced hike on Wednesday afternoons. The pace will be determined by the group. We'll observe seasonal changes in the forest and enjoy learning some background and history of the Greenbelt. Dress for the weather and terrain. Sturdy shoes are a must. If you have any questions regarding further details, or cancellations, contact us at: naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org or by phone at 718-351-3450. – Night Hike in the Snow. Photo: Dorothy Reilly Every Wednesday unless weather conditions are severe (regular amounts of snow won't stop us from going out!): Join us for our weekly evening, guided hike where we will cover 4/5 miles. There are some small climbs but it's fairly easy. We try to maintain a quick pace but can accommodate all skill levels. You will see parts of the Greenbelt and the trail system that you haven't seen before! We typically meet at the Greenbelt Nature Center unless there is a special program being held, in which case we begin and end at the LaTourette Golf Course Clubhouse, 1001 Richmond Hill Road. Always check the event listings here for any changes. Dress for the weather and trail conditions. Proper footwear is essential. Bring water and a snack if you think you'll need it. No reservation is required. We go in all weather unless conditions are dangerous (thunder storms). Always check the Greenbelt Conservancy's Facebook page for updates on changes or cancellations (Cancellations generally only occur in very bad weather). As the days get shorter, we will leave and return in the dark so please bring a flashlight or headlamp to be prepared. – Thursdays through May 31: Through hands-on activities, crafts, and stories, 2 year-olds and their caregivers will become familiar with the sights and sounds of the forest. Space is limited. Registration required. Fee: $3 non-members/Free for Greenbelt Conservancy members – Fridays, November 2 - 16, and November 30, 2 - 4 pm: Join us for a creative writing workshop for seniors, led by Marianna Randazzo, designed to express thoughts and feelings about nature through language. Seniors will try several different creative writing styles, including field and reflective journaling, poetry and story writing, and writing from a specific perspective. Draft-writing will be conducted outdoors on the grounds of the Greenbelt Nature Center (weather-permitting); at the conclusion of the class, students will have the opportunity to create a final copy of their favorite piece of writing from the session and present it to their fellow participants. Registration is free but required as space is limited: Contact us via email at: naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org or by phone; 718-351-3450 This event is funded, in part, by Poets & Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Saturday, November 3 & 10 - Free and open to all (no reservation is required) : Join our trail running ambassador, Anthony Maranzano, and your fellow runners for two free trail running clinics designed to familiarize you with trail running and the Fall Flat 5K course in Willowbrook Park. Arrive dressed and ready to stretch and run. The group will meet by the flag pole in front of the Carousel pavilion. Ample parking is available in the lot behind the carousel. Fall Flat takes place on Saturday, November 17, a friendly 5K race designed for runners of all skill levels. The event helps raise funds for the Greenbelt Conservancy, which works in partnership with NYC Parks to care for the Greenbelt's trails and open space. Go here to register.
