Sunday, June 2: Volunteer Trail Maintenance with Friends of Island Trails - We Need You! Meet at the Yellow Trail entrance at Forest Hill Road and Platinum Avenue If you use and value the Greenbelt trail system for recreation and relaxation, then please volunteer for a few hours and join us to conduct trail grooming and maintenance along the Yellow Trail off of Forest Hill Road and Platinum Avenue. We will begin and 9 and stay for a few hours - join us for however long you can. The Bug Club is an educational mini-series that explores the anatomy, life-cycles and the natural history of bugs though engaging activities, bug excursion in the Greenbelt, and live insect demos! Hey Kids! Come join the fun at our Borough President's annual Kid's Day at the Carousel! There will be free activities and music and more! Tues June 4 1pm Seed Send-Off Workshop with Freshkills Park Tuesday, June 4: Have you ever watched dandelion seeds float away in the wind and wondered how other plant seeds travel? Join us to learn about the different ways plants disperse their seeds and then make and test your own seed dispersal designs. Recommended for ages 6+. More information available at freshkillspark.org Wednesday, June 5: Join a Greenbelt naturalist/environmental educator for a group hike along High Rock Park trails. You will learn a bit about local flora, fauna and history. Free and fun - please register by email at naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org or by phone: 718-351-3450. Dress for the weather and terrain. Suitable for adults 18 and over. The weekly evening group hike covers approximately five miles at a quick pace. All are welcome including children with hiking experience who can cover the distance. Please dress for the weather and terrain, and bring water to sustain you. This hike meets in all seasons. Beginning in October, headlamps or a flashlight is required. Please join us! – Chancellors’ Day Professional Learning for Educators: Population Education for grades 6-12 Thursday, June 6: Population Education, a program of Population Connection, is the only national program with a strong emphasis on curriculum and professional development for K-12 educators that focuses on human population issues and their effects on the environment and society. Since 1975, the program has developed age-appropriate curricula to complement students’ science and social science instruction about human population trends and their impacts on natural resources, environmental quality, and human well-being. Educators who attend receive a CD with lesson plans and information about natural resources and sustainability. CTLE credit available. $10 refreshments and materials fee.
