FrogWatch USA is a nationwide program that monitors and tracks amphibian populations by collecting data with help from volunteers like you! Your data is valuable in assessing the health and biodiversity of local amphibian populations, and you may also have a chance to monitor your favorite wetland with your family, friends, or scout troop. This is a rare chance to hear from top experts on the impact of tick-borne illnesses on our borough. Researchers from the New York City Department of Health, Columbia University and Manhattanville College will give presentations and take questions from the audience. You’ll learn how to spot and avoid ticks, and how to safely remove a tick that has become imbedded. With the summer season almost upon us, it is as important as ever to protect yourself from ticks and tick-borne diseases as you venture outside. We hope you will join us for this free event. Visit the Greenbelt Nature Center for an evening of dinner and conversation surrounding grassland habitat. Members of the Freshkills Park team will join ecological researchers from the College of Staten Island to lead a presentation and discussion about one of Staten Island’s lesser-known habitat types. Learn about the history of land use on Staten Island and in the Northeast that has led to the loss of grassland habitat, as well as the opportunities that newly formed urban grasslands provide. Guests are welcome to arrive starting at 5pm. The dinner and discussion will begin at 6pm. A vegetarian dinner utilizing local produce will be provided. Each year data is consistently collected along a well-established route on the last Saturday in June.
