FrogWatch USA is a nationwide program that monitors and tracks amphibian populations by collecting data with help from volunteers like you! Your data is valuable in assessing the health and biodiversity of local amphibian populations, and you may also have a chance to monitor your favorite wetland with your family, friends, or scout troop. You may also have the opportunity to attend special workshops related to amphibians. Community service credit is available. This is a free and fun monthly event that takes place through August, 2019. We will start out passing Ohrbach Lake and Pump House Pond, and rise up the hills of High Rock with views of kettle ponds. Our destination will be overlooking the Richmond County Country Club Golf course with views of Lower New York Bay and the distant Atlantic Highlands of New Jersey. This view was made famous in an iconic painting, "Looking Oceanward," by American painter, Jasper Cropsey in 1895. He depicted in oil a majestic wide-angle scene of the farmland that preceded the golf course and its distant views. The painting is in the collection of the Staten Island Museum. Many call this spot the "Cropsey Overlook." Wear closed-toed shoes with traction. Bring snack and water. Hike should be approx. 2.5 hours.
