– Join us for this monthly virtual conversation with the former environmental educators who have shaped the Greenbelt into what it is today! These virtual walk & talk interviews will offer insight into the science, art and hiking programs which followed the education landmark status received in 1971. Please register for this event via EventBrite. – Join the Environmental Educators on a virtual stroll through the Winter landscape to learn about the owls that might be spotted throughout the Greenbelt. You’ll learn about what an owl pellet is, and observe as the Educators dissect an owl pellet that they found right here in High Rock Park. They’ll even show you how to identify some of the bones that are found inside! Arrangements will be made for you to come and pick up your very own owl pellet so that you can reveal the mysteries inside and learn a bit more about some of Staten Island’s most mysterious birds of prey, from the comfort of your own home! Best for ages 7+. Please preregister for this event via EventBrite. – FrogWatch USA is a nationwide community science program that monitors and tracks amphibian populations by collecting data with help from volunteers like you! Learn how to identify local frog species, their importance in wetland ecosystems, and more. This 90 minute online training session will certify participants as FrogWatch USA volunteers. – Join us, from the comfort of your own home or school, and meet some of the unique animal ambassadors at our Greenbelt Education facilities. During this virtual program you will get up close and personal with snakes, turtles, frogs and much more! Our educators will address your questions and help the group learn about the natural history of these amazing animals. – Birds rely on a steady source of food throughout the seasons to survive cold nights, migration, and harsh winters. That’s exactly why this month’s Nature Crafts program will teach you how much fun it is to make your very own bird feeder ornaments to help feed the birds that may be traveling through your yard! Join Environmental Educator Angel Ehlers on this hands-on virtual journey, as she takes you through the easy process of making your own bird feeder from a few simple materials and ingredients. Angel will also teach you about some of the birds that you may be lucky enough to see visit your very own feeder in early Spring! Best for ages 6+. – Gray treefrog (Hyla versicolor) in High Rock Park, June, 2019 Photo: Christopher Ricker With Spring arriving, come join Educator Christopher Rommel as he talks about a small, green friend: Frogs! Springtime is the frogs most noisy season of all, so come on by to see what all the hubbub is about! We will learn fun facts, read a great story book and make a creative frog craft together. It would make us very hoppy to see you! Please preregister for this event via EventBrite. – Join us for Con Edison’s Virtual edition of Family Science Night. These science experiments and activities are perfect for an evening of family fun and learning together.
