– Join the Greenbelt Environmental Educators for a Facebook Live stroll through High Rock Park, as they continue this virtual series to read through the book "High Rock and the Greenbelt." This fourth walk and talk will take place in High Rock Park. The Educators will read some excerpts from the fourth chapter of the acclaimed 1976 book that chronicles the fight to save and preserve this Fine Patch of Wild. They will walk you through the trail to see the sights and hear the sounds of High Rock Park over 40 years after the book was written. We will see what has changed, what has stayed the same, and much more! – What better way to celebrate Earth Day by learning how to traverse your way through its beautiful land. Taking a hike is a great way to spend the holiday. Join educator Christopher Rommel, as we learn the parts of a compass, how to orient yourself with one and how to use one with a map! – This month’s Nature Crafts with Angel will help celebrate Earth Day by doing two things that are great for the Earth; recycling and planting seeds! Environmental Educator Angel Ehlers will lead you in a fun and messy craft that will give new life to old paper that will be a plantable love note to the Earth, with a layer of wildflower seeds in the paper. Once planted in the soil, and given some water and sunlight, you can watch your recycled paper and seeds grow into new life! Participants will need a blender or food processor at home for best results with this craft. Best for ages 5+ with adult supervision. Please preregister for Earth Day Nature Craft here! – Join us, from the comfort of your own home or school, and meet some of the unique animal ambassadors at our Greenbelt Education facilities. During this virtual program you will get up close and personal with snakes, turtles, frogs and much more! Our educators will address your questions and help the group learn about the natural history of these amazing animals. Preregister for this month's edition of Animal Ambassadors here! – Join us for a special Earth Day edition of Storytime with educator Christopher Rommel. During this virtual program, not only will we learn about what it means to celebrate Earth Day, we will also make a fun craft using recycled materials in the spirit of the holiday. – – Join Environmental Educators Christopher Ricker and Angel Ehlers as they take you on a virtual Scenic Perspectives Hike through one of the most serene parts of the Greenbelt’s Blue Trail, Deere Park. The Educators will share the beauty of this hilly landscape with you, as well as information on how this area was formed. Nestled between residential development, a public school, and the highway, both natural and human impacts have contributed greatly to the unique scenic perspective of this park that still brims with vibrant wildlife. Please preregister for this month's Scenic Perspectives program here. – April 30th is Arbor Day, an annual observance and celebration of the importance of trees. On this virtual hike, learn about some of the trees that have been leafing out in the Greenbelt- and how to photograph trees and upload them to the iNaturalist app. Then learn how to apply these same skills to the City Nature Challenge 2021: New York City, collecting valuable data to help nurture and protect the species that call the Staten Island Greenbelt home.
