– Bug Club: Welcome Junior Entomologist! Have you ever chased butterflies, collected fireflies, observed moths or rolled a log to see what lives beneath it? Insects are the largest group of animals on earth with nearly one million different kinds. And, this first meeting will explore what makes a Bug-A-Bug! Age 5+. Free to Join - Register today!! – Plants are all around us and without them we wouldn’t have a forest at all! Join us to explore some of the oldest (and largest) plants that we can find in the Greenbelt- TREES! We’ll use our observational skills, our senses, plus field guide books and the iNaturalist app to start to learn how to identify some of the most common trees found in this forest, and learn just why they’re so important. We’ll even get crafty with it and make leaf and bark rubbings to take home with us to remember the day’s lessons! Ages 8-11 yrs cost $20.00 – Join us for a hike at High Rock Park and discover the different types of birds that call the Greenbelt home. – Enjoy the cool forest of Reed’s Basket Willow Swamp. This part of the Greenbelt offers unpaved trails, stately trees and streams. Trails have some hills. Meet at the end of Spring Street, off of Richmond Road. – If we pay attention, we start to realize that there are flowers all around us! Some are large and showy, while some are smaller and more plain- but they’re ALL important! Join us on a short exploration of High Rock Park in search of beautiful wild flowers! This hike and the flowers we see will fuel our inspiration for creating eco-friendly wildflower art! Using all recycled materials, we’ll learn how to make a beautiful flower out of old book and newspaper pages. You’ll be amazed at how you can give trash a second life as a flower! Ages 8-11 yrs cost $20.00 Register HERE today! – Join the Greenbelt Conservation Corps for this exciting plant monitoring event, and your chance to become a community scientist right here in High Rock Park! Loosestrife Swamp is a vibrant wetland ecosystem which provides habitat for countless plants and animals- and has been doing so for hundreds of years! The GCC will be conducting a site visit to compare the plant species that are growing in the area today to what could be found there nearly 50 years ago! Learn how to use field guides, historical texts, and iNaturalist to determine how things have changed in half a century! – All plants grow from a single seed, and in this program, you’ll learn all about what seeds look like, how they spread, and what they need to grow. We’ll even go hunting for some of the seeds that we can find in the forest. We’ll brainstorm about how important seeds are to our daily lives and what the world would look like without them! Finally, we’ll plant our very own seeds in recycled containers to bring home, with a list of instructions on how to give them everything they need to grow into strong plants! Ages 8-11 yrs Cost $20.00 – Join a Greenbelt educator for some interesting facts about the whales that are in the New York harbor. Then take a grab n go craft, while supplies last.
