Join in on our first Advanced Basketry series to learn how to identify and safely harvest your own natural materials to create a basket. The first portion will be focused on hiking to the harvesting site, finding our materials, and safely removing them from the landscape to prepare for the craft program. Not only will we be harvesting them for a utilitarian purpose, but the Greenbelt will be healthier once we’ve removed damaging invasive plants from the forest. The second portion will reconvene back down at the Greenbelt Nature Center to learn a universal basket weave to turn all of your Honeysuckle vines into a beautiful rustic basket. – During the course of the program, participants will take a nature walk to gather leaves (weather-permitting), then have the opportunity to paint/print/make books inspired by the leaves for themselves and contribute components to be used in a fiber arts mural. This project is funded in part by a DCA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts with public funding from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Age 5+. Free.
