Saturday, July 13: Join us as we amble the lows and highs of High Rock Park.  We will start out passing Ohrbach Lake and Pump House Pond, and rise up the hills of High Rock with views of kettle ponds.  Our destination will be overlooking the Richmond County Country Club Golf course with views of Lower New York Bay and the distant Atlantic Highlands of New Jersey.

This view was made famous in an iconic painting, "Looking Oceanward," by American painter, Jasper Cropsey in 1895.  He depicted in oil a majestic wide-angle scene of the farmland that preceded the golf course and its distant views. The painting is in the collection of the Staten Island Museum. Many call this spot the "Cropsey Overlook."

Wear closed-toed shoes with traction.  Bring snack and water. Hike should be approx. 2.5 hours.  Meet in the High Rock Park parking lot at the end of Nevada Ave., off of Rockland Ave.  Ages 8-adult. Registration required. Call (718)351-3450 or email naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org.
