Fiftieth Anniversary of Earth Day Hike in the Greenbelt

earth day

Wednesday, April 22: Back in 1970 the concern for the world’s health prompted a special celebration called, “Earth Day.” This non-political Green movement permeated throughout the schools across America, and raised awareness of the earth’s troubles: littering, air, and water pollution.

On Staten Island, five years after High Rock Park was saved from development, the new fight was to stop the development of the Richmond Parkway that was slated to run directly through the unborn Greenbelt.

Join us as we hike to commemorate the people and groups that helped preserve and protect the “fine patch of wild” that became the Greenbelt-and celebrate our Planet Earth.
