Greenbelt Summer Camp 2018: All Sessions are Full – See you in July!

Dear Parents:

The Greenbelt offers exciting, educational, hands-on summer camp experiences that guide children safely though outdoor exploration.  Our camp is great for nature lovers, scientists, creative types, and adventurers alike.

“Explorer Camp” is for 7 – 13 year old children.

“Young Buds Camp” is for 5 – 6 year old children who have completed a year of kindergarten.

This year’s five-week summer camp session will begin on Monday, July 9.   You may sign your child up for one, two or all five sessions.  Camp headquarters is High Rock Park, Monday – Thursday from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm.

The Greenbelt Environmental Education Department is dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the outdoors and elevating environmental literacy in people of all ages, through camp, school, and public programming.

Camp Themes for Summer, 2018


Explorer Camp (7 – 13 year olds)

Full STEAM Ahead – Monday – Thursday, July 9 – 12

Join us as we use Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) to explore the forests, animals, ponds, and streams of the Greenbelt!

Nature by Design  Monday – Thursday, July 16-19

How did bird anatomy help develop airplanes? Why do the Greenbelt’s forest and geology appear the way they do today? Explore the architectural threads which connect life on earth, and the natural blueprints that have assisted human beings in survival.

H2 Awes0me –  Monday – Thursday, July 23-26

Washing, drinking, cooking, hydroelectric power, growing crops! Water is literally everywhere and used for everything. Dive into the fascinating properties of this unique element, and explore water with hands-on experiments and activities.

The Art of Science – Monday – Thursday, July 30 – August 2 

Who says science isn’t beautiful or creative? Explore and create using examples from nature that follow aesthetic design principles, patterns, mathematics, and music theory.

GSI: High Rock – Monday – Thursday, August 6 – 9

Study various phenomena and forest clues to unravel the unknowns of the natural world in Greenbelt Science Investigations. As part of the GSI Team, gather physical evidence and use forensic analysis to solve mysteries around the Greenbelt.

Young Buds Camp (5 – 6 year olds)

This program is designed to help younger campers discover the wonders of the forest.  Your budding naturalist will have fun fun learning about the animals and plants that thrive in the Greenbelt.

Week 1. Insects Monday – Thursday, July 9 – 12
Week 2. Birds Monday – Thursday, July 16 – 19
Week 3. Water – Monday – Thursday, July 23 – 26
Week 4. Reptiles and Amphibians – Monday – Thursday, July 30 – August 2
Week 5. Mammals – Monday – Thursday, August 6 – 9
