Join us as we celebrate Independence week. We will hike the patriotic trail colors of red, white and blue. Trails are unpaved, and have some hills so wear sturdy shoes and bring water. – Join a Greenbelt educator at the carousel for some facts about the seals that make Staten Island their home. Then take home a nature grab n go craft, while supplies last. – Join us for a story about our Greenbelt ponds. Then take a closer look at the animals and plants that live in a pond. Grab n Go craft to take home. Meet at High Rock Park parking lot, 200 Nevada Ave., off of Rockland Ave. – Hike through Reeds Basket Willow Swamp on this brisk paced hike. Distance is approximately 3-4 miles. We will meet and begin at the top of Chapin Avenue. Duration will depend on the pace/size of the group. Please be prepared for the weather, distance and terrain. Bring plenty of water and a snack. – Join the Environmental Educators on a fun day of learning how to use binoculars to see things near and far throughout the forest! We’ll make it fun for you as you get better at focusing on interesting features throughout the park. The best part is that we can view beautiful wildlife friends from a safe and respectful distance, but still get the thrill of sharing space with them! There might even be some mysteries of the forest just waiting to be uncovered! Ages 8 -11 years - Ticket cost $20.00 – Observe the wonders of the Greenbelt while learning all about the birds that can be found in High Rock Park. Children and their caregiver will use their own senses on an educator led hike through the forest and discover what birds eat, where they live and how they survive in the forest. We will also learn how to use fun tools like binoculars to help us find the amazing animals that call the sky their home. Ages 5-7yrs with caregiver Cost $20.00 Get yours HERE – We observe so many amazing things while we’re out in the park, but it can be really hard to remember everything we experience and observe! Join us in making your very own personal Nature Observation Journal, learning how to create beautiful entries, and even take part in a sit-spot exercise to immerse yourself in nature. We may even catch a glimpse of something really special to write and draw in your journal to take home with us! Get your Tickets today! Ticket cost $20.00 – Join us at High Rock Park for a fun craft and Children and their caregiver will enjoy and a short exploration hike to find out how birds make their homes and find the foods they love to eat. Make your own birdfeeder to take home and observe the birds that visit in your own backyard. Get your TICKETS today! Ticket cost $20.00 Ages 5-7yrs with caregiver. – Every wonder why some birds eat seeds and others eat worms? Why are some beaks long and sharp and some short and stout? The answers to these questions and more will be discovered bird through a super hands-on science lab where children and their caregiver will test different "bird beaks". We will even make our own bird beak to try out for yourself! Ages 5-7yrs with caregiver Ticket Cost $20.00 - Get yours today!! – First Program / 9am-10:30am / TRASH BASH! Join the GCC and lend a helping hand to clean up litter that can be found along the Multipurpose Trail. All tools and materials will be provided for a fun time bashing the trash in our neighborhood. Meet on the trail at Travis Avenue and Forest Hill Road. (Closest restroom is at the Greenbelt Nature Center at 700 Rockland Avenue) Second Program / 11am-12:30pm / Invasive Plant Species Removal Continue your day of service to the community by joining the GCC to remove invasive plant species from the trailside to help return balance to the Greenbelt. All materials will be provided as well as instruction on some common native plant species and invasive plant species. Meet at the Greenbelt Nature Center at 700 Rockland Avenue.. Third Program / 1pm-2:30pm / Trail Structure Maintenance Finish off your full day of service with the GCC as we visit existing structures along the trail that need seasonal maintenance to keep them safe for hikers, including drainage, puncheon, and trail tread. This project will include tool use and basic trail-building instruction. Meet at the Greenbelt Nature Center at 700 Rockland Avenue. Register for ONE or ALL events here!! – Join us for a hike at High Rock Park and discover the different types of reptiles and amphibians that call the Greenbelt home. – Join the Greenbelt Environmental Educators at Willowbrook Park and enjoy a craft and outdoor activity during this fun pop up program! Crafts will be first come first served basis while supplies last. – – PAULO’S PEAK – Come hike to the newly appointed Paulo’s Peak, formerly once known as Moses’ Mountain. On this three mile hike we will take in the nature around us as we transverse the incline to the top of this man-made mound. Trail has some inclines. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Meet at the Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave., at the intersection of Rockland and Brielle Aves. – Last year the GCC created a reroute of a portion of the Greenbelt Red Trail for the safety and enjoyment of our park visitors. Join the GCC on July 20th in keeping up the good work by helping to maintain this new trail. We will be clearing out drainage areas, checking on the health of our newest trees and shrubs and picking up any debris we find along the way. Be prepared to work outside in various weather conditions, wear sturdy footwear and please bring water and a snack. – Youth will work collaboratively on team and community-building activities, while learning essential outdoor skills, and develop their own leadership styles. Ages 12-15 - Register HERE! – Join us as we hike through swamps, ponds to beautiful Orbach Lake. Trail has hills and trails are unpaved. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a drink. Meet at the High Rock Parking lot, 200 Nevada Ave. off of Rockland Ave. – Lets visit ponds and pools around high Rock park and watch dragonflies, while learning all about their lifecycles – The Strawberry bush (Euonymus americanus) is a beautiful native plant that is unfortunately endangered in NYS but fortunately grows right here in the Greenbelt. Help us protect this important plant from hungry deer by joining the GCC installing fencing in High Rock Park. Be prepared to work outside in various weather conditions, wear sturdy footwear and please bring water and a snack. – Greenbelt Summer Adventure - Ages 12-15 Youth will work collaboratively on team and community-building activities, while learning essential outdoor skills, and develop their own leadership styles. – Water is an essential element for all life on our planet. Including us!! Children and their caregiver will join our environmental educators in discovering the amazing and unique characteristics of water thorough hands-on science experiments and activities. Ages 5-7yrs with caregiver - Tickets cost $20.00 During the course of the program, participants will take a nature walk to gather leaves (weather-permitting), then have the opportunity to paint/print/make books inspired by the leaves for themselves and contribute components to be used in a fiber arts mural. This project is funded in part by a DCA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts with public funding from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Age 5+. Free. – Bug Club: Welcome Junior Entomologist!
