Science Cafés: Engaging Conversations about Things that Matter 

Thursday, March 5: In partnership with NYC Parks, the Greenbelt Conservancy proudly presents Science Cafes, featuring engaging conversations with scientists and experts about varying topics. These casual conversations are perfect for people who may or may not typically get involved with science discussion and help to foster dynamic, two-way interactions between a scientist and the public.

Please join us as we kick-off this new series on Thursday, March 5 at the Greenbelt Nature Center. Jose Ramirez-Garofalo, a graduate student at the City University of New York – College of Staten Island, will facilitate a conversation about how climate change effects the distribution of bird species. Drawing on his experience from work at Freshkills Parks, Mr. Ramirez-Garofalo will also highlight the extraordinary birding opportunities available right here in the Greenbelt.

Light refreshments will be served. Suggested donation: $10.

José Ramírez-Garofalo is currently a graduate student at the City University of New York – College of Staten Island. He is primarily interested in how climate change effects the distribution of bird species. Since 2017, he has worked with his colleagues on several projects at Freshkills Park, including monitoring the highly sensitive species that breed within its expansive native grasslands, and the Freshkills Park Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship bird banding station.
