A Great Man
October 27, 2011
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Greenbelt/Staten Island Park Supervisor Herbert “Smitty” Smith.
Smitty was a kind-hearted soul who always wore a smile. He was an inspiration to his co-workers and his staff through his consistent can-do attitude, kind nature and generosity of spirit. During the past two years, Smitty enjoyed serving as the Supervisor of the Greenbelt. He was known to bring a cake to work every morning to share, not only with his coworkers, but with hikers, dog walkers, the mail person and anybody who visited the High Rock office. Smitty was loved by all and will be deeply missed.
Smitty started his career with Parks through the CETA program in 1974 on Staten Island. He was later appointed Park Service Worker in 1981. He rose steadily through the ranks, becoming a Supervisor in 1987. He dedicated himself to the boroughs of Brooklyn and Manhattan before finally returning to his home borough in 2002.
Think of our dear friend the next time you’re in the Greenbelt.
